MARTIN MARGIELA: IN HIS OWN WORDS

A decade has passed since Martin Margiela’s departure from the esteemed fashion house Maison Martin Margiela. In His Own Words delves into the life and work of the fashion industry’s most critically acclaimed, and most mysterious designers. Having never shown his face to the public, Margiela famously conducted interviews over fax machines in third-person. The fashion myth talks candidly for the first time about his 20 years in fashion, the ideas behind his ingenious work, and why he chose to remain anonymous, with leading fashion figures, such as Jean-Paul Gaulthier and Carine Roitfeld providing commentary.

PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE

There’s a good reason why Portrait of a Lady on Fire is gathering momentum for award nominations and high-praise from critics; the heartbreaking historical drama is a cinema masterpiece. Winner of Best Screenplay at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, film auteur Céline Sciamma intertwines romance and art in Portrait of a Lady on Fire, with a distinctly modern feminist energy. In late 18th century, France on a windswept remote island off the coast of Brittany, painter Marianne (played by newcomer Noémie Merlant) is commissioned to paint a wedding portrait of the reluctant bride Héloïse (Adèle Haenel). As each day passes, the two women’s admiration for each other begins to grow in a simmering, star-crossed romance.

THE TRUTH

French screen legends Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche star in The Truth, a powerful and emotional story of family conflicts. Fabienne (Catherine Deneuve) is a reigning actress of French cinema, whose problematic relationship with daughter Lumir (Juliette Binoche) is tested when she returns to Paris. Family dynamics are at the forefront in The Truth, as Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda delves into the lasting effects of unspoken truths and unresolved conflicts on a fragile relationship between mother and daughter.

CUNNINGHAM

The extraordinary work of contemporary dancer, pioneering choreographer and legend Merce Cunningham is the subject of Cunningham, a cinematic experience seven years in the making. The documentary traces Merce’s artistic evolution over three decades (1942-1972), weaving together his iconic dances and never-before-seen archival treasures to bring a breathtaking explosion of dance and music to the big screen. Cunningham is a timely tribute to one of the world’s greatest modern dance artists.
