Whistles Weekend: Escape To Amsterdam

With the Eurostar now running a service from London to Amsterdam, it’s easier than ever to visit the Dutch capital. Fast becoming one of the most cultural cities for a weekend escape, there are a multitude of museums, buzzy cafés and delicious restaurants to discover. We’ve rounded up where to eat, stay and what to see for a getaway you won’t forget.

1. Where to eat

There are an abundance of charming eateries to uncover whilst exploring Amsterdam. Kick things off in the morning with brunch at hip restaurant Toki or take a break in Negen Straatjes – a neighbourhood situated between the two main canals – and enjoy organic sandwiches and homemade cakes in the local cafés. Looking for a casual dining experience? Refuel after a day of sightseeing at Foodhallen: an international hotspot offering over 20 different stalls and cuisines. For a stylish, rustic restaurant setting head to Wilde Zwijnen. With on-trend interiors, an open kitchen and a tempting menu offering fresh local ingredients, this is Dutch dining at its best.

2. What to see

The rich history and culture across Amsterdam means there’s no shortage of things to see. For unrivalled views of the city, take a canal tour and stop off at the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum – both must-visits for art connoisseurs. An easy way to take in the sights? Hire a bike for the afternoon, cycle along the picturesque canals and head to one of the many parks or gardens for a picnic; Rembrandtpark and Vondelpark are two of our favourites. Finally, be sure to visit the Anne Frank House for a sobering yet fascinating exhibition about the persecution of the Jews during the war.

3. Where to stay

If you’re looking to stay somewhere stylish and original, Pulitzer Amsterdam is for you. Perfectly located just moments away from the Anne Frank House, Royal Palace and Van Gogh Museum, it comes with quirky rooms, a tranquil inner garden and three on-site dining options. Another popular choice in the heart of the city is the Seven One Seven hotel. Visitors can expect the ambience of an eccentric mansion, with spacious suites, unique decor and an elegant patio to sit out on during the summer. Looking for an affordable alternative? Check in to the stylish Generator Amsterdam: a hostel overlooking Oosterpark. Formerly a zoological university, there are various room sizes on offer, as well as relaxation areas, basement dining and a chill-out bar that stays open late.
