6 Hotel Openings of 2021 To Inspire Your Next Trip

It’s safe to say that travel, as we knew it, has been heavily disrupted for much of the past year and most of us have been left yearning for that inimitable holiday feeling. The excitement of an early-morning start to catch a flight, the joys of perusing duty-free, and the bliss of checking into a hotel-cum-home have been playing on our minds whilst 2021’s line-up of hotel openings has been steadily growing. With hopes of a more optimistic future, we’ve rounded up this year’s highly anticipated properties that are a good place to start planning ahead with.

Desa Potato Head, Bali

Following the successful launch of Potato Head Studios – Desa Potato Head’s 168-room hotel – the remainder of the complex will launch this year. The decade-spanning project, uniquely designed in partnership with David Gianotten at Dutch practice OMA, will be home to a farm-to-table restaurant, numerous bars, a multifunctional gallery, several rooftop areas, and an amphitheatre. Placing much importance on music, the hotel will also feature a recording studio, as well as a subterranean discotheque designed in partnership with DJ Harvey. The Potato Head experience seeks to transcend traditional hospitality, creating a place in which music, art, design, food, wellness and sustainability collide.

Kingsland Locke, London

Forward-thinking home-meets-hotel brand Locke launched its fourth London property, Kingsland Locke, in the heart of Dalston earlier this month. With the area famed for being one of the capital’s most eclectic neighbourhoods, Kingsland Locke houses 124 contemporary studio apartments, as well as a complimentary co-working space, on-site microbrewery and gin distillery, all-day restaurant, workout studio and coffee shop. Boasting a large, naturally lit atrium space on the lower ground floor, the hotel provides a relaxing atmosphere by day which transitions into a lively bar come nightfall.

Pan Pacific London

Opening just across from Liverpool Street station, Pan Pacific London marks the capital city’s newest landmark tower, offering 237 guest rooms crafted under the vision of Yabu Pushelberg. The property represents several firsts for London, including a floor dedicated to well-being, incorporating a dramatic 18-metre infinity pool with spectacular views over Bishopsgate Plaza; a host of landscaped outdoor space with gardens integrated into the design of the restaurant and recreational facilities; and a ballroom equipped to host the most luxurious of events. Offering gracious hospitality and a touch of Asian resourcefulness, Pan Pacific London will be a place of utmost elegance

Hutton Brickyards, New York

Perched on the  uninterrupted waterfront in Kingston, New York, Hutton Brickyards is set to open in spring, welcoming guests by seaplane, helicopter, boat, train or car. The hotel sits upon 73 acres of rolling hills and lush meadows, with panoramic views across the Hudson River. The sprawling campus will offer invitations for fun and activity, such as an archery range, croquet lawn, firepits and bicycles. Opportunities for hikes, guided kayak experiences, paddle-boarding, running, outdoor yoga, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and beekeeping are also abundant in the neighbouring wilderness and water. Meanwhile, a delivery cart meanders down a cabin path to reach guests who may raise a woven flag to signal a room service request. The effect? A retreat detached from everyday stresses, inviting visitors to experience a genuine sense of place.

Zentis Osaka

With all eyes on Japan this year with the upcoming Olympics, the country has seen a plethora of hotel openings, ready to welcome incoming tourists. Designed by celebrated interior specialist Tara Bernerd, Zentis Osaka creates meaning and connection through a distinct sense of place. Imagining the guest rooms like traditional Japanese bento boxes, interlocking layouts were devised to optimise on the limited floor space and create a functional yet inviting sanctuary. The lobby showcases a fresh colour palette which continues throughout the rooms, introducing muted tones with warm pops of colour, whilst traditional artworks by a local artist nod to the vibrant location in which the hotel is set.

The Londoner, London

Set to open in Leicester Square this spring, The Londoner is launching as the world’s first Super Boutique hotel. Designed with sustainability at its core by the renowned design studio Yabu Pushelberg, the property will showcase a contemporary aesthetic across sixteen stories, encompassing 350 guestrooms, two private screening rooms, a mix of six concept eateries, bars, a tavern, and a gym and spa.
